Surreal Snake Series

The Request

This started out as a very basic request to edit the backgrounds of a large batch of images. But as it often does, my creative spirit took hold and I was inspired by this one particular image. The photo itself did not turn out great. It was way too blurry, even in the foreground, but I loved the idea that the photographer was going for, and wanted to run with that.

I wanted to have a complete head, and much more detail in my piece, so I found another great image of the model, with a snake on her head that I thought would be a perfect match! I compiled the two images into one, and then used that to create a pencil sketch. My fledgling idea was to have the pencil sketched hand bursting through the paper.

The Results

As I worked to create the torn-paper edges for my planned project, my brain kept on turning… I should make the hand turn to full color as it emerges from the page, as though life is bleeding into the drawing from the real world and turning graphite to flesh.

By the time I had finished with my rought draft of that image, my brain had begun to imagine the woman climbing further out of the page, and decided to make it a whole series of images, which I then compiled into a single 4-panel image.

This is still pretty rudimentary, I only changed the size of the hole in each image. I might come back when I have some free time and actually change the poses a bit in each frame, so it looks more like she is actively climbing out. What do you think?
